Child Custody Options
Hello, I’m Oklahoma Mothers’ Rights Attorney Palmer Johnson. I specialize in family law matters with a particular focus on helping mothers navigate the legal proceedings that affect their families. In today’s video, I’m going to talk to you a little bit about child custody and what that means and what your options are.
So if you can co-parent, then you would have joint custody where both parents would essentially have equal decision-making authority and rights as to important decisions related to the raising of their children, where they’re going to go to school, religious teachings, medical decisions, things of that nature. And that works really well when parents can set aside what could be their personal differences or the breakdown of their marriage for the benefit of their children.
Benefits of Joint Custody
Joint custody requires cooperation on both sides. It can be a very positive thing and there are tools that can help make that easier for parents that are struggling to get along but that potentially see the benefit of joint custody for both parents like a parenting coordinator that can help keep the smaller more minor issues that wouldn’t necessarily rise to the level of court intervention from becoming a nuisance or kind of breaking down the opportunity to co-parent.
In some situations, joint custody is just not going to be an option and sole custody is a more appropriate option for a court to award or for the parties to agree on. And what that’s going to do is give one parent superior authority over the big decisions that you would need to agree on in a joint custody situation.
Creating a Custody Arrangement
The custody does not necessarily have to affect the visitation schedule though often in a joint custody situation you would see the parents splitting something that looks more like 50-50 visitation time and perhaps a little bit more modified schedule visitation in a sole custody arrangement. Again, these can be uniquely tailored to the specifics of an individual family’s needs or according to what the parties can agree upon.
There can be a lot of challenging issues that come up if one party lives in another state or intends to relocate and we have solutions that are workable for families and we can help you decide what is the best option for your family.
